ep29. GENERALLY SPEAKING

Newham Generals (Footsie and D Double E) descend on The Young Punx studio for live grime PAs, freestyles and a chat about the scene’s underground roots. Breakage’s Hard, Head Get Mangled and Dat Guy collide with dubstep, electro house and drum & bass, while rum and Coke finds its way onto Hal’s brand-new computer. There’s an unexpected investigation into the world of furries before the Generals dash off to catch the last Tube. The survivors press on with a Boy George acoustic remix featuring Jamiroquai guitarist Rob Harris, and Betto’s one-finger Kaossilator piano recital. A thoroughly professional evening.

ep28. GONG!

A gong gets trapped in a pair of skis during two hours of electro house, fidget, dubstep, grime and drum & bass from a snowy London studio. Hal, Nathan and Betto demonstrate how to give compliments by balancing a bottle on your head and making the recipient dance, while Betto’s listener-sourced girlfriend is becoming alarmingly real. There’s live Dizzee Rascal from the BBC Electric Proms, unreleased Young Punx material, an unexpected detour into The Cure and Roxy Music, and an entirely unnecessary Muppets remix. The last Tube leaves. The show carries on. Naturally.

ep27. THE CHICKEN CURRY DISASTER

A chicken curry on the floor, Jack Daniel’s in the hard drive and a £30 glass in pieces. Two hours of breaks, nu-disco, electro and dubstep are going brilliantly! Meanwhile, Simon’s international girlfriend search gets alarmingly successful when fans turn up to a Berlin gig with actual candidates. Mice on Toast send in the first song we’ve ever played ABOUT the podcast, there’s a world-exclusive Young Punx album preview, and general studio carnage continues. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry.

ep26. FIRE ALARM!!!

A real fire alarm hijacks a drunken fidget house and new rave DJ set… and somehow makes it better. A massive storm hits London, triggering a siren we didn’t even know existed. Nobody can turn it off, so Nathan keeps mixing as the alarm seems to fall in time, sometimes even in tune, with the electro-house tracks. Total rave carnage! Plus a special audio shout-out from Don Diablo. And no, we didn’t fake it.

Music in this show: Boy 8-Bit – Chapel of Ghouls, Visti & Meyland – Yes Maam (All Night Long) (Trentemoller Remix), Gramophonedzie – Why Don’t You, Seductive – Ultimate Rise feat. Luxx (Jamaican Remix), L-Vis 1990 – Ultimate Groove, Chuckie & Silvio Ecomo – Moombah (Afrojack Remix), Nadastrom – Pussy, Dirty Funker – Flat Beat (Tube & Berger Remix), Maurizio Gubellini – Insane (Vocal Mix), Zombie Disco Squad – Vie, Mogwai – I Am A DJ (Horrors Mix), Wolfgang Gartner – The Grey Agenda, Spencer & Hill – Cool (Afrojack Remix), Mason – At The Hippo Bar, Riton & Primary 1 – Who’s There (Dub), Renaissance Man – Dubbo.

ep25. 2 MINUTE ROAST DINNER

An ill-advised two-minute roast turkey dinner interrupts a 2009 blast of electro house, nu-disco, breaks and early dubstep. Back from Japan, Hal, Betto and Nathan share stories of performing with Count Bass D and discovering Sakanaction, alongside new music from Phonat and an early Avicii remix. There’s news of backing Dizzee Rascal at the BBC Electric Proms, a surprisingly serious debate about Michael Jackson, and a barely audible phone call from Jamiroquai guitarist Rob Harris. Most importantly, Hal launches an international search for a girlfriend for Betto, kicking off a ridiculous saga that will run for several episodes.

ep24. BEER BOTTLE STRAUSS

When Warsteiner beer asks The Young Punx to remix Richard Strauss, the logical next step is performing Also sprach Zarathustra (the 2001: A Space Odyssey theme) on actual beer bottles. Hal and Betto then tear through fidget house, nu-disco, drum & bass and old-school hip-hop while reviewing Ferrero Rond Noir chocolates and experimenting with a newly acquired Moog Voyager. There’s new Phonat, wonderfully odd 5/4 electronica from Max Neutra, and an exclusive Slumdog Millionaire-inspired Jai Ho club rework featuring Guthrie Govan’s ‘Boratcaster’ guitar, mixed by Wez Clarke and finished just minutes before the show. After all that, the only sensible way to end is with a Rickroll.

ep22. SIMON LE BON’S T-SHIRT

When two children wearing Young Punx T-shirts meet Duran Duran, Simon Le Bon’s X-rated Tom of Finland shirt turns their souvenir photo into a Christmas-card Photoshop emergency. Hal and Betto soundtrack the chaos with 2008 fidget house, electro, breaks and nu-disco, while attempting to make riveting radio out of eating mince pies and an improvised one-line Christmas blues. There’s an early introduction to Gotye’s Hearts a Mess, with Hal revealing that he and Guthrie Govan worked on the album, plus the story of LBJ recording haunting electronica inside a frozen Finnish sea fortress. Add a deadmau5/Shapeshifters mashup, jaw-dropping Guthrie Govan guitar and a John Zorn finale. Merry Christmas!

ep20. TANZANIAN DISCO STAMPEDE

Hal and Betto deliver fidget house, electro, drum & bass, disco and breaks, alongside tales of supporting Tiësto in Ibiza, Hal splitting his trousers in front of 15,000 people in Japan and Betto’s surreal Berlin café adventure. Phonat drops in with fresh Wolfgang Gartner, Hal proves he really sang on Supermode’s Tell Me Why, and the pair improvise the surely overdue ballad When a Man Has a Podcast. Finally, a strangely worded Tanzanian news headline provokes some unfortunate giggles. Then the tragic details emerge, and the real comedy becomes the increasingly hopeless struggle to stop laughing at precisely the moment they absolutely shouldn’t.
